Saku Mattila / Wheel

Saku continues to amaze me with his super versatile skills and wonderful, humble attitude towards life and making music. I’ve already said many times – but I’ll say it once more – that I’m a huge prog rock fan. When Saku told me about Wheel, I got immediately excited – but it was not until I saw them live first time that I realized how fantastic band this actually was. James, Saku, Mikko and Santeri have a really unique thing going on, and I have my fingers crossed good things will come to them. Check out the video – and visit their YouTube channel to hear a couple of more amazing songs. Can’t wait to hear more!

Saku is a professional freelance musician and guitar teacher from Helsinki. He has studied in Sibelius Academy jazz department and Pop Jazz Conservatory, and he works a lot – sessions, live gigs, television, theater – you name it. Currently Saku is recording his first solo album, and works hard with his prog rock band Wheel.

Every year on December 6th, Finland celebrates its’ independence day. In the core of the festivities is the traditional Presidential Independence Day Reception, held at the Presidential Palace. Approximately 2000 guests are invited to this luxurious party, and millions more (including myself) gather at our television sets every year to catch a glimpse of the glamorous festivities – amongst them Saku playing his Duke. The guitar actually fits like a glove to this noble occasion – thanks to the name and the snow white color!
