The Key to Finding a Balance in life
Some of you might remember our Unicorn Video Diary, a 17-episode YouTube series that documented the complete design process and build of the first Unicorn guitars, introduced in January 2009 at The NAMM Show. That means 2024 is indeed the 15th anniversary of the Unicorn guitar. 🥳
One feature often overlooked in guitars is the balance, when playing sitting down, with the guitar resting on your lap. Those of you who watched the Unicorn Video Diary back in the day might recall that I discussed this at length in episode 2. I’ve found the Gibson Les Paul to be pretty back-heavy—it tends to fall backwards on your lap.
To improve the balance of the Unicorn, the body shape is quite different from the iconic Les Paul shape—and I don’t just mean the cutaway. I’m talking about the waist of the body shape. I’ve shifted the waistline down towards the bridge pickup, just enough that the guitar sits on your lap in perfect balance. This way, you don’t need to hold the guitar to maintain a comfortable playing position—the guitar stays nicely balanced on your lap, allowing you to focus on playing.
