Why some guitars feel special and others don’t?
“I have noticed that it is often challenging for guitar players to understand why exactly a certain guitar feels special, while another one doesn’t. It could be due to the setup, string gauge, or some other easy-to-alter detail—but often, I’ve come to realize that if a certain guitar is not inspiring to play, changing the pickups or adjusting the instrument differently doesn’t help. The essence of it appears to be somewhere else and not so easy to detect and analyze.
The weight of this Duke Supersonic is 2.78 kg (6.13 lbs). The reason I mention the weight first is that there is a direct relevance between the light weight and why this instrument might remove certain obstacles between you and your music. Sounds cryptic, right? Well, hear me out before judging!
Under 3 kg is very light for a solid-body electric guitar of this style. As a result of the light weight, the acoustic timbre of the instrument is loud. Why? Because when you play, the energy of the strings transfers to the wood and makes it vibrate. The heavier and denser the wood, the more energy it would need to vibrate. So in this regard, lighter weight equals more vibration. Why is this vibration meaningful, then, you might ask? Because that is what players refer to, knowingly or not, when they say a certain instrument is exceptionally inspiring to play, or that the guitar cuts through in the mix better than the others.
